1. The Purple Carrot Food Truck - A Triple D Favorite
Address: 4480 S Hagadorn Rd, Okemos, MI 48864
I wanted to launch our Michigan Diners Drive Ins and Dives page with The Purple Carrot as this is the Red Haven restaurant's food truck. Red Haven is a fantastic Michigan Farm to Table restaurant that we visit whenever possible. The carrot soup, wraps and harvest salad are my favorites at the restaurant. The food is spectacular and the service is so very friendly so the food truck will also delight.
The Purple Carrot Food Truck launched in 2013 as Michigan's First Farm to Truck food stand! It's our favorite of Guy Fieri's Triple D restaurants in Michigan.
“That [deep fryer] looks like the community pool in Flavourtown."
~Guy Fieri
(It sounds like a nice place to vacation, wonder if they rent condos on VRBO?)

Meatballs:
8 ounces white bread (de-crusted, cut into 1/2-inch cubes)
2/3 cup heavy cream
4 cups minced red onion
1 cup grated Parmesan
1 cup minced parsley
6 tablespoons minced garlic
2 teaspoons kosher salt
2 teaspoons fennel seeds
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
8 ounces pancetta, minced
8 eggs
5 pounds 50/50 pork and beef blend
Pizza:
1 pizza dough ball (use your favorite store bought or make
your own)
3 ounces pizza sauce (use your favorite store bought or make
your own)
2 meatballs
Fresh mozzarella, sliced, as needed
Ricotta, as needed
Pepperoncini peppers, thinly sliced, as needed
Pickled onions, as needed
Directions
- For the
meatballs: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
- Combine
the white bread and heavy cream in a large mixing bowl. Mash the bread until it
is thoroughly broken down. Add the red onions, Parmesan, parsley, garlic, salt,
fennel seed, oregano, pepper, pancetta and eggs and mix thoroughly. Add in your
pork and beef blend, again mixing until fully incorporated.
- Using a
3-ounce ice cream scoop, portion your meatballs onto a sheet tray lined with
parchment paper. Align them tightly packed but not touching! Bake until golden
brown or the internal temperature reaches 155 degrees F, 8 to 10 minutes.
- Remove
the meatballs from the oven and place in a cooler or refrigerator until cooled
to 40 degrees F.
- For one
pizza: Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
- Roll out
the dough. Ladle the pizza sauce onto your dough, spreading evenly. (Feel free
to add more if you like heavy sauce!) Crumble the meatballs, evenly spreading
them out over the entire pizza. Next, add your fresh mozzarella and ricotta
cheese. Place in small increments starting along the outside and working your
way in to the center. Evenly spread your pepperoncini slices and pickled onions
all over the pizza. Cook until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes. (Depending on
how you like your pizza, this time will vary.)
Cook’s Note
When making any pizza, follow the "Less is More, Better
Spread Out" rule. You want to taste every topping in every bite, but you
also need balance. Try not to bunch up your toppings or your cheeses, and make
sure everything is nice and evenly spread for best results!
3. Eastside Fish Fry and Grill
Address: 417 East Kalamazoo St, Lansing, MI 48912
Eastside Fish Fry & Grill is known for cooking up spectacular chicken wings that are prepared with a 48-hour dry rub marinade and fried to order.
If you want to get a little crazy, try their crispy fried gizzards and pig skins. Definitely an original Michigan Diners Drive Ins and Dives.
So this is neat, Eastside Fish Fry & Grill has a "you buy it, we fry or grill it" idea!
Guy Fieri Trivia

“If it tastes really good and it’s funky, it’s funkalicious.” ― Guy Fieri
-an except from the dictionary in the Flavourtown library
(We just nabbed a copy-we needed to be down with the lingo, baby!)
*Need more fun ideas of things to do and see while in Lansing?
What Happened to West Michigan's famous Rosie's Diner? Rosie's diner, located in Rockford, Michigan, closed permanently in 2011. What a bummer as many people coined Rosie's Diner as one of the most iconic diners in America! Even Guy Fieri thought so in in 2007 during the 12th episode of Season 1 of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Since then, the iconic diner has sadly fallen into disrepair. We think someone needs to buy the diner and start a new chapter for this famous eatery.
5. Zaytoon Mediterranean
Address: 940 Elmwood Dr, Lansing, MI 48917
Zaytoon Mediterranean offers several vegan meal selections, as well as traditional Mediterranian food and meat favorites. Are you gluten free? They offer an extensive gluten-free menu!
Zaytoon is a healthy alternative to fast-food as their Mediterranian food is made fresh from raw ingredients, including local produce when available. They also offer a fresh juice and smoothie bar!
Want something yummy? Try the chicken shawarma with garlic sauce and delicious lamb grape leaves served with creamy hummus. Such fun things to do in Michigan!
6. Meat Southern BBQ and Carnivore Cuisine
Address: 1224 Turner St, Lansing, MI 48906
This Southern-style barbeque joint is known for their house-smoked pork belly pastrami and pickle fries that are per Guy, “another level of ridiculous.” Also try the smoked wings with Black Magic sauce. Meat Southern BBQ boasts large portions of tasty BBQ at a reasonable price!
Sounds like a great Michigan Diners Drive Ins and Dives!
7. Union Woodshop - Kid Rock and Triple D Restaurant
Address: 18 S Main St, Clarkston, MI 48346
Union Woodshop is known across the land for their awesome barbecue- even Kid Rock loves it!
Try The Porker, made with house-ground pork, housemade Michigan maple bacon and housemade hotlinks. This dish really rocked Guy Fieri's world when he visited.
Oh, and you need to try their burnt ends, house smoked wings, smoked salmon pate, cherry pork salad or juicy burgers!
Oh, and try the Woodshop Chili made with house-smoked ground beef, smoked sour cream and topped with cheddar cheese. Chris likes their Back Ribs that are smoked until they pull clean from the bone, dipped in sweet BBQ sauce. YUMMY!
8. Joe's Gizzard City
Address: 120 W Main St, Potterville, MI 48876
You bet, Joe's Gizzard City is known for their deep fried chicken gizzards and they guarantee their gizzards will be the best gizzards you’ve ever tasted. (This is definitely the record number of times I have written gizzard in one sentence...or ever, for that matter)
They also toot their own horn about their freakin' good chicken dinners, hot sandwiches, hand battered onion rings and burgers. Try their Triple D Burger! Oh, and they fry up a mean Twinkie or Smore too! What a fun Michigan Diners Drive Ins and Dives restaurant!
9. The Fly Trap
Address: 22950 Woodward Ave, Ferndale, MI 48220
In this episode, Guy Fieri had a thing for the Pho Bowls, so you gotta try one!
Special Dishes: Vietnamese Pho Bowls, Thai-Style Peanut Chicken, Homemade Salmon Burger, Gingerbread Waffles
10. Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger
Address: 304 S Ashley St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104
So I hear the fresh-ground burgers are freakin' awesome but you have to order right.
- First the size
- Then the bun and toppings
- Lastly, the cheese
“Look at the festival of funk,” Guy said of his burger piled with onions, peppers, bacon, salami and mushroom.
Be sure to order crunchy onion rings!
11. Polish Village Café
Address: 2990 Yemans Ave, Hamtramck, MI 48212
The Polish Village Café serves authentic dishes like pierogis, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, kielbasa, schnitzels and other Polish favorites!
The Hungarian pancakes are fried and topped with a goulash made with pork butt. Guy loved the crunch from the pancakes and the "megatender" meat. Feeling fiesty? Try the dill pickle soup and the pierogi's!!
12. Supino Pizzeria
Two Locations!
- 2457 Russell St, Detroit, MI 48207
- 6519 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202
The City Wing Thing pizza (topped with piles of smoked turkey, cherry peppers, smoked Gouda, mozzarella and roasted garlic) came out a winner in Guy's book.
You can order just a slice of pizza pie to get a taste of this deliciousness or a whole pizza!
- Grab a margarita pizza with a glass of wine for one heck of a meal at this Michigan Diners Drive Ins and Dives!
- The 18" San Gennaro comes with red sauce, roasted red peppers, onion, and house-made Italian sausage.
- Vegetarian? Try the 18" Jess with red sauce, kalamata olives, spinach, baby portabella mushrooms, chili oil, basil.

13. Clarkston Union Bar and Kitchen
Address: 54 S Main St, Village of Clarkston, MI 48346
This was the episode where Guy Fieri visited the restaurant with Kid Rock
Owner, Curt Catallo, transformed an old church into a comfort food diner that is now known as THE SPOT for mac and cheese. You can also order burgers (try the Bacon Onion Jam burger-chuck, short-rib & brisket patty, bacon, house-made onion jam with Swiss), sausages (like house-made bratwurst, kielbasa and hot links), salads and more!
Kid Rock and Guy Fieri dug into a bowl of creamy mac and cheese, calling it the "most macked mac & cheese."
It's also a great spot to grab a cold beer, so be sure to check out this Food Network Diners Drive Ins and Dives restaurant!
14. Traffic Jam and Snug
Address: 511 W Canfield St, Detroit, MI 48201
The cool thing about Traffic Jam and Snug is their dedication to making everything fresh and in house...which means they utilize their rooftop garden to the fullest!
It's a dream restaurant! Their menu changes seasonally to reflect the seasonal best from local farms and markets. They have a ton of vegetarian, vegan, fish, meat and poultry options. Plus some great desserts!
- The Traffic Jam also brews their own beer in house!
Plus they have a bakery that turns out a new Bread of the Day, from authentic ethnic crusted rolls and vegetable breads to whole grain sourdoughs and cheese loaves.
What's Cool?
- Traffic Jam and Snug uses the same equipment for brewing beer and making cheese! See for yourself from their observation balcony!
What did Guy eat? The hot-sauce jelly beans in the pork loin kamatsu salad! Locals also enjoy the huge braised-beef panini sandwich made with their fresh baked bread.
A yummy lunchtime choice is their cheese platter, consisting of three of delicous cheeses, served with crackers, fresh berries, and house-made honey dijon mustard.
15. Comet's Diner - Frankenmuth
This one isn't on Guy Fieri's Diner's, Drive-in's and Dive's show, but we wanted to add it. Comet's Diner is located in Frankenmuth right across from the Wilderness Trials Zoo. It's super cute! They offer breakfast around the clock with pancakes, burritos, omelets! Of course there's sandwiches, salads, hotdogs, burgers and more!
